LAFAYETTE 200 CELEBRATION – Old Shawneetown

May 9, 2025

A bicentennial celebration of Maj. Gen. Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Shawneetown will be held in Old Shawneetown.

Today we underestimate the significance to southern Illinois that the Revolutionary hero
Lafayette chose the two most significant cities at Illinois’ statehood, Shawneetown and
Kaskaskia, for his 1824-1825 Farewell Tour of the 24 states of the United States.
The goal of the nation-wide bicentennial celebration is to educate about the life and legacy of
Lafayette, to celebrate the Franco-American Alliance, and to enrich public knowledge through
meaningful programming and remembrances.
