Ordinary People in an Extraordinary War – The American Civil War
September 15 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
If you are interested in southern Illinois history or genealogy come join us in Vienna, Illinois at the Vienna public Library, located on the historic Johnson County public square. Program is free and begins at 2:30 pm.
A special program is being presented by Rick Allen. The presentation is entitled “Ordinary People: Extraordinary War — Personal Stories of the American Civil War.” Too often, when we discuss or study the Civil War, we examine larger than life people such as Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, or Abraham Lincoln. Yet it was the average American citizen who fought and endured the extreme hardship brought about by that devastating conflict. Unfortunately their stories are too often lost to history. Listen as Rick Allen relates some of those he has uncovered.
Rick is a resident of Johnson County. He holds a Master’s degree in History, teaches college history courses at Southeast Missouri State University, has participated in national historical and genealogical institutes/conferences for over 25 years, and has conducted extensive local historical and genealogical research. He was editor of The Saga of Southern Illinois from 2006 to 2012 for the Genealogical Society of Southern Illinois. Rick specializes in researching antebellum America, the records of southern Illinois, and solving “brick wall” genealogical problems.
Come and listen to this outstanding and informative presentation. For additional information or information on the activities of the Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society, call cell number 618-771-6877.
